Cherokee Flageolets
( Indian Love Flutes)
The flute was used in courting. As the name implies, it was said that it was played by the young warriors to court his young maiden of choice after the sun has set and everything is quiet around the camp. Being a courting flute, the women were not allowed to play these instruments. Some say they were not even allowed to look upon the flute. Each flute was an individual creation and it was looked upon as rude, if not worse, for someone else to play another's flute. Furthermore, when the man was successful with the flute in his courting purposes in the matriarchal society of the Cherokee Nation, the woman whom he had successfully courted broke the flute in half. She did so to prevent him from playing it for anyone else. The Cherokee Flageolet (Love Flutes) have a sweet, soft, warm sound.
